The grumpy bearded man's guide to networking

Howdy Reader!

Ever feel like a fish out of water?

That was me last week at the first-ever Newsletter Marketing Summit in Austin. Usually, I’m the guy on stage or hanging out with my conference buddy (and daughter) Abby.

This time? I was just… that awkward bearded dude in the corner nursing his drink.

Here’s the thing - I’ve spoken at countless conferences, but this one was different. I went solo. No speaking gig. No familiar faces. Just me, there to learn.

And boy, did I learn something unexpected…

It wasn’t just about newsletter strategies (though those were great). The biggest lesson came from feeling completely out of my comfort zone.

Do you know the advice I always give my kids: “Nothing great ever happens with something easy” and “You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable”?

Yeah… it turns out I needed to take my own medicine!

Here are some hard-won lessons from my awkward adventure:

  • The “Can I sit here?” rule: Almost nobody says no, and it’s your ticket to great conversations
  • Why keeping your phone in your pocket might be the best networking move. Looking at your phone is like a force field that screams, “Don’t talk to me!” to everyone around you. Plus, you might miss that perfect conversation starter or connection because you were scrolling through and deleting spam emails.
  • How doing something different can actually spark creativity (I filled my voice notes with ideas on that 4-hour drive home!)
  • The power of being the listener instead of the speaker

The coolest part? By day two, something magical happened. Once I embraced the awkwardness, doors started opening. I even reconnected with a past interview guest who’s now going to be on an upcoming show talking about e-commerce!

Here’s what I realized: As creators, we NEED these uncomfortable moments. They shake us out of our routines and force us to see things differently.

So next time you’re at an event and spot someone sitting alone (maybe a grumpy-looking bearded man staring into his drink 😉), go say hi. You never know what kind of connection you might make.

See ya around the interwebs,

-Jeff

P.S. Have you ever felt completely out of your element at an event? Hit reply and tell me about it. I’d love to hear your story!

I recently discovered something cool at the Newsletter Marketing Summit in Austin that I HAD to share with you....

Howdy Reader! Ever wish you could clone yourself just to get everything done? (Without the whole evil twin subplot, of course!) I get it. As creators, we're constantly juggling multiple tasks, wearing ALL the hats, and somehow trying to maintain our sanity in the process. That's exactly why I'm excited about this week's show. We're digging into the world of automation and systems with someone who's mastered the art of doing more by doing less. Meet Joe Casabona, the wizard behind the curtain...

Howdy Reader! Listen, I try not to get too excited about every new AI tool that comes along (there are about 47 launched every day, am I right? 😅) But this one? This one's different. Google just quietly dropped what might be the biggest AI image creation breakthrough of the year - and the best part? It's completely FREE. I know what you're thinking... "Jeff, we've already got DALL-E and Midjourney. What's the big deal?" Here's the thing - this isn't just another image generator. This is...
